• Hey there! 😊

The SMERALD Learning Platform is here to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and vocational education and training (VET) professionals by offering flexible, competence-oriented training in AI and data analysis. The platform is like a friendly space where you can explore AI-driven innovations and data applications at your own pace. You can choose modules that fit your professional needs, making learning fun and easy!

    What's the SMERALD Platform?

A platform where you pick the courses and learning units. Our platform caters to beginners and experts alike, offering personalised learning in data analysis and AI.

Hey, let me explain how it works:

    1. Start by taking a look at where you're at right now.

Use the SPIDER Questionnaire (it's part of the LEVEL5 approach module) to think about what you already know about AI and data analysis. This handy tool will help you see what you're good at and what you need to learn more about, so you can make sure the course is just right for you.

    2. Pick your course: Have a look at all the courses on offer and choose the ones that suit your interests and what you need to get better at.

    3. You can learn at your own pace, which is really great. You'll have access to all sorts of interactive learning materials, like videos, presentations, real-world case studies, and hands-on activities.

    4. Then you'll get to engage in practical activities, like applying your learning through exercises, simulations, and real-world challenges designed to bridge theory and practice.

Are you ready to get started? 😊 Begin with the SPIDER Questionnaire to assess your AI and data analysis abilities, then explore the SMERALD Learning Platform. Take the first step towards developing AI-driven strategies that will support your work and business!

Available courses

The AI Moodle Course is a modular, competence-based training offering specifically designed for SME professionals and trainers who want to explore the potential, usability and responsible integration of AI tools into daily business practices. The course structure follows a practical and reflective learning journey based on the LEVEL5 framework and the SMERALD competency model, ensuring that learners build knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a balanced way.

This course provides a comprehensive journey through the data lifecycle, from discovering and cleaning raw datasets to analysing and visualising insights effectively. By mastering these essential skills, learners will be equipped to transform data into actionable, impactful results.

The SMERALD Competence Framework is based on the LEVEL5 approach, a taxonomic system developed for competency-based learning and validation. LEVEL5 uses a three-dimensional model that recognises the development of

  • Knowledge (cognitions): Understanding digital data, data analysis and AI concepts.
  • Skills (actions): Applying digital data techniques and tools in practical business scenarios.
  • Attitudes (emotions and values): Cultivating a proactive and adaptive mindset towards digital transformation.

This model categorises competencies into five quality levels, ranging from novice to competent expert. It provides a structured method for designing and planning informal and non-formal learning experiences, while validating competences in specific practical contexts. The LEVEL5 approach emphasises the importance of context and ensures that learners can effectively demonstrate their competences in real-life situations.

LEVEL5 is not just about validation, it is a holistic validation and learning system.

Therefore, it is designed to plan and deliver competence oriented learning - especially in informal and non-formal contexts where no pre-written learning plans are available.

This course introduces VET professionals and SME trainers to the SMERALD approach for competence-oriented assessment in AI, Data Analysis, and Digital Data. You will learn how to support meaningful competence development using practical tools such as the SMERALD Competence Framework, the SPIDER self-reflection tool, and the LEVEL5 validation approach.

Through a set of 16 structured assessment methods, you will discover how to design authentic, learner-centred assessment activities that reflect real SME challenges and promote continuous improvement. The course combines short explanations, examples, practice tasks, and reflection to help you select the right methods for your training context.

By the end, you will be equipped to implement competence-oriented assessment confidently and purposefully in blended and informal learning environments.

The SMERALD CPD provides a transversal training model for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) that can be replicated across sectors and projects.
Its purpose is not to turn participants into AI experts, but to build awareness, curiosity, and capability for integrating AI and data-driven thinking into professional and educational practice.

Design Thinking provides us with a systematic and structural approach to solving complex problems from many fields and to find new solutions that meet the needs of those involved. It is often used in the field of idea and innovation development.

The method is based on a multi-step, agile and iterative process. This design thinking process helps us to narrow down and actually understand our problem, identify solution spaces and generate concrete ideas. In each step of this process, we apply different creative techniques and thus approach innovative solutions for our problem. Users and their needs are always in the foreground.

This course introduces the steps of the design thinking process, explains them and provides a number of methods and tools which can be applied to facilitate each step.

This course is designed to improve your own competences regarding COL&V. It is divided into 4 learning units with different focuses, which can be worked through individually.

The course is based on the reveal publication which is therefore deposited on the main page.
